'Don't Tell the Soul' is something similar to what I would say if I ever wrote a play that I suspect. I can only imagine "what the most exciting thing could happen next?" then write it down, regardless of whether it is related to the story or the characters. There are really confusing character choices in this film. Changing the tempo and shifting motives are almost impossible to keep up with. It's a shame because it really disrupts a film that, when handled in a script, has a real impact.
The film digs a small hole (you say) early on and I don’t think they knew how to get out of it in a realistic way. There is an interesting foundation laid, but the next logical step to further the story is not a logical step. From there the story and the arcs of the characters all just pop out the window and the film splits. Where Mena Suvari's character for example ends up being about something funny as I have seen in the film.
I wanted to love 'Don't Tell the Soul' but it didn't click me. Even at 83 minutes very short it feels like a slow pull. Rainn Wilson has always been thrilled to watch whatever she does, and there is a strange curve-ball in a bit of fun, but as a whole the film did not work for me at all.
