The movie was incredibly powerful but also had some obvious flaws. Although the plot is predictable, the world in which we live does a good job of keeping it in check. A mysterious combination of magical steampunk and gods walking among the people. While the gods who walk among mortals are not new to Chinese mythology, having an arrangement into a strange combination of old Hong Kong school + advanced robots and prosthetics + magical creatures is something I have never seen before.
What bothers me the most about this film is that they don’t do enough to set the characters and their motives. It is fast and has beautiful images made in style but the characters lack real depth.
The conversation and the flashback scenes were also so fast that I had to step back a few times to understand what the hell was going on. The film expects you to become acquainted with the gods in the movie which confuses people when this is their first taste of Chinese mythology.
Despite all that, animation alone is worth a look. It is as beautiful and beautiful as or better than Pixar. There are a few water scenes that look real, it's hard to believe they are animated.
Was this movie complete? No it lacks heart and depth.
Did I enjoy it? Hell yeah! Certainly a popcorn film that will grab your attention as you enjoy clever animation and fun fighting scenes.
