I must admit that when I received the 2019 film “Ip Man: Kung Fu Master” here in 2021 I would have been amazed and thrilled. I had no idea they were making another Ip Man movie, so this was a good surprise. And needless to say, I did not need to be persuaded to sit down and watch it.
Well, hold your horses there for a moment. This movie is not as good as other Ip Man movies, especially the ones with Donnie Yen. No, not even close.
Sure, "Ip Man: Kung Fu Master" looks great, but don't raise your hopes with this 2019 movie from writers Liming Li and Qingshui Shi. It was watched, yes, but this movie did not have a well-thought-out story line. Everything in the film seemed fast and shallow.
Yu-Hang To - who plays Ip Man - really knew his martial arts and put on an impressive show. But the film about him just fighting was not something that was considered fairly entertaining. It is a real shame that the authors have failed to come up with an interesting and complete story.
Although I was able to watch the whole movie, this is by no means a martial arts, nor is it a movie that authorizes more than one view.
My rating of "Ip Man: Kung Fu Master" is based on four out of ten stars. The film came and went without leaving a lasting impression. If you like karate movies, there are some great movies out there. And if you enjoy Ip Man movies, there are some great movies out there.
