Former lawyer George Blackledge (Kevin Costner) and his wife Margaret (Diane Lane) lost a great deal when their son died in an accident. Their daughter-in-law Lorna, and granddaughter Jimmy, are also remarried to Donnie Weboy. The couple left town without telling Blackledges. Margaret longs to find them. The Blackledges traced them back to the Weboy family home run by matriarch Blanche.
The first part acts like a horror film. They are building a historic meeting. It may stay on a terrible trail. It might be a better move. Instead, I have to ask some of the Blackledges do. They exacerbate the situation. I have no problem answering a family dispute. I will not try to force the interest to focus on this war. If kept to a minimum, this can be very easy. Like the Greek catastrophe, it works best when both sides are very equal in responsibility. It would make Blanche's last question even more painful. I would also ask what the police would do after the end of the film. They dragged poor Peter into this mess. I am sure the police would have followed him or not quarreled with the whites.
