Savage Movie Review

The film provides an interesting insight into the culture of gangsters in New Zealand that are truly violent, but also complex and horizontal. I’ll admit I moved a little in my chair for the first few minutes - that’s very angry - but soon after that we were exposed to the story of how “Danny - aka Damage” (Jake Ryan) went from being a young boy to a big family with an abusive father living in poverty. Reduced from stealing food, he is apprehended by the police and placed in a care center - abandoned by his family and pitied by other cruel and hunting officers as he grows up. Along the way, he becomes his friend "Moses" (John Tui) and in order to protect each other and gain respect, they start a gang of "Savages". Amazing fact about Sam Kelly's film. So far from the beautiful scenes we often see from the NZ, this gives a glimpse of the real existence of these men in the public sphere with their own rules - code of etiquette - that we bet anyone who escapes. Symptoms evoke pathos and hatred but as he grows older, there is a human being who has never left "Danny" and what he really thinks of himself begins to cling to, and doubt, his honesty. Don't be discouraged by the first five minutes, it's a clever and thought-provoking story to watch.
