Alice Review
Greetings again in the dark. Greater trust leads to marriage. We try to pick someone we can think of, and his or her behavior is in line with ours ... especially if raising children is part of our strategy. Certainly sometimes things do not turn out the way we expected, and the author's director Josephine Mackerras shows us what happens when things go awry - when someone we trust is very different from the person we believe he or she is.
Alice (Emilie Piponnier) and Francois (Martin Swabey) seem to be a normal wife and husband raising a beautiful little boy named Jules. Alice is a beautiful and caring person, her beauty shines through with her smile. Francois is a lovely type that quotes scriptures from dinner parties before planting a delightful kiss on his wife in front of everyone at the table. One day, Alice's credit card was rejected, leading her to a dark street where no one hoped to go. Francois has already issued the cards and has withdrawn the entire bank account. Worse still, their apartment is about to be vacated due to a lack of payment.
Further research leads Alice to Elegant Escorts and the realization that her beloved husband was living a double-minded secret life - leaving her penniless and small child. What happened next is truly amazing. The sweet Alice looks much stronger than she looks. Following the mother's directive, Alice manages to save her life and provide for her son. Her friend and mentor in her new name Lisa (Chloe Boreham), who offers tips and emotional support. This finds him in the first difficult and bad attempts to do his new jobs. He soon believes the plan works and will be able to save his home, but alas, Francois reappears and makes the situation worse.
This is the first film from Ms. Mackerras is also nominated for a Grand Jury award at SXSW. An obvious comparison here is that of Louis Bunuel's masterpiece BELLE DE JOUR (1967) starring Catherine Deneuve, the obvious difference being that one character was lonely and longed for attention, while the other longed to save his home. Discovering yourself plays a role both. The tag line of the film says: "You did everything right, until everything went wrong", and it is a reminder that we often get the inner strength we need in times of crisis. The film also provides a good storyline in highlighting the cleansing power of nature. A beautiful little film that highlights the talent from filmmaker Josephine Mackerras and lead actress Emilie Piponnier.
