 The Last Duel Review

"The Last Duel" is a joint production between the United Kingdom and the United States since 2021, so it's still the latest movie and film as long as you can see in the title of my review. This allows it to exceed the mark of 2.5 hours, or just a little longer. The language spoken here from beginning to end despite all the French names of the main characters is English, certainly due to the background of the actors. There is one very short incident where we have Adam Driver using the German language, which was especially interesting to me as a German native. So when I mentioned one of the characters already, but I will first sit with the people who made this movie and who are not seen on screen. The director is Ridley Scott, from his 80s now, but he has expanded more than ever. I saw them even announce plans to direct the Gladiator sequel? However, Scott has never been a successful writer, so they found a lot of other very interesting writers instead. The first would be Nicole Holofcener, an experienced director herself, and she co-starred with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, which is interesting not only because of the characters they play in the film, but also because of their shared time. It all started with them writing Good Will Hunting and winning an Oscar at a very young age. They’ve written something about 25 years from there again, but not often. For Damon, the film here was the first credit for writing since 2012 and Affleck has also worked on a single screen over the past decade. As for their characters, they are opponents here, and interestingly because these two are really close friends in real life and have been around for a long time. Do you remember Ricky Gervais announcing Damon as a medalist and what he said about Affleck? I think it was in the Golden Globes. Anyway, let's stay with this movie for now. Yes, I have to talk to Adam Driver again. His career is really intensifying with Star Wars, this film, the upcoming Gucci movie (also screened by Scott) and another film starring Marion Cotillard. Life is good for him. The lead woman here is Jodie Comer, who won an Emmy in Killing Eve. He seems to support the first 90 minutes, but that changes soon after. Those are big names, and Harriet Walter probably.

So this film took place a few hundred years ago, which should be obvious from the post here imdb already. Good characters for what I can say, especially with three big words. These are not the ones that usually find strong Hollywood horses in films like these, but Scott's directing certainly helped the issue, especially since he had previously worked with Damon in a game that really won Martian a few years ago. Now, let's focus on this one here and the story here is very much on Earth. You can basically divide the film into four parts. Three of them are the main story told from the perspective of one central character (Damon, Driver and Comer each on this show) and number four is basically a presentation that takes place after these three episodes in chronological order and a real duel. finally and the presentation is basically the appetizer of this duel. However, let us focus on these three long intermediate sections for now. There are scenes in those that are shown twice, which is one of the reasons why the film is so long. This refers mainly to the tragic rape scene which is the backbone of the plot, as well as the title of the film, so it makes sense that they put it twice. I still think it would probably have been a better film if it had been 20 minutes or so short, but I have to admit that I don't really know what I can cut, so let's keep it all this way. Other than that, it was safe for me from the beginning to the end that this film would get good recommendations and there was no doubt there. Unfortunately, and I can only call it a good film and not a “good” film because the memorable parts were rarely enough to appreciate so much. Technically, it’s almost a flawless film about everything that falls into this category. It does not matter if we are talking about clothing, materials, sound, artistic direction and cinematography. Maybe some. I believe this will elevate Oscar nominees in some of these categories.

For doing so probably is not the case, even if it does not think it would be the same at all. I mean Comer has brought one of the strongest women of the year films on screen here. Damon (with a big scar on his face) and Driver had a few moments where they really shone and Ben Affleck, who has unusually white hair, also made an impact, even though his character was probably not important enough to pay attention to big prizes. But he took a risk here, he played something different than he used to do and he did a good job with it. I have to admit that it took me a long time to realize that it was her, who was related to her appearance, but also how she really disappeared from the character here. Good on him! As the #metoo debate continues in 2021, it is not surprising that the film still makes strong statements when it comes to how women lived centuries ago and what their rights were. That is, almost none. After the rape, Comer’s character talks to her husband and tells him that he can only deal with it if he supports her. True. She could not do anything on her own and Driver's words that perhaps her husband might kill her were also unheard of. She is her husband's property and her father's military history does not help her either. But it seems Damon's character really loves him because he marries her even though his father, though he gets less than he was promised and stays with him over what happened to him when everyone was out. There is an additional "scientific" statement there. A woman cannot get pregnant because of rape. A woman cannot get pregnant if she does not have an orgasm. Or a small death as they say. Oh what were the times then. Perhaps people who complain about the lack of adequate sexual language should think about it instead of really looking for things they can do wrong because of racism. Or take a comment about how he or she looks like an attractive driver. That is a completely different topic, but not uncommon for 2021.

As for the real duel, it was okay I think, but it was still powerless. They tried as hard as they could in pairs to beat the horses first, then to kill the horses and fight just like the infantry. I didn’t really like the fact that they actually made it always look like the Driver character is in charge and leading to turning things into a happy ending with the Damon character. You probably remember the words quoted from the Driver character about how he would not have even bet Damon character in battle and this was a bit of a joke.
