Coming Home in the Dark Review

You saw this at Imagine filmfestival, usually in Amsterdam but now 100% online. What could happen to a more terrifying family than what we saw in A Clockwork Orange (Kubrick 1971) or Funny Games (Haneke 2017) ?? This movie seems to follow a similar pattern, at first, but there are significant differences. The murder of these two young children allows the film to begin in a dramatic way. It leaves no doubt right from the start about the intentions of armed pilots who take a couple on long car trips to an uncertain destination. Everything is likely to continue or end.

After half an hour, the resemblance to two movies from 1971 and 2017 disappears. We find that these abusers have axes to grind, which started about 20 years ago. They are not abusers as a random target. It makes a huge difference, so the two movies mentioned above are not comparable candidates. However, the similarities quickly came to mind when I read the caption, though it does indicate that it is a red fish as the story progresses.

Thanks to the spoiler, I can't reveal much of what happened next. It’s all about accountability, guilt, maybe revenge. Memories are restored during a long journey to the place where everything happens. One of the stories separates the two parents (how can you allow that). What it all covers, is gradually revealed. It is not a spoiler when you write here that there are no winners or losers, only victims.

Q&A with director James Ashcroft after the audition was very informative. First, the theme comes from the documentation the director contributed to, about the institutions that had the task of educating young people, without the proper care to protect these children. Even the difference (are you there?) Between bad and insensitive when something bad happens, you get tested. Second, there is no real leading role. All interactions are intertwined and become more important as the story progresses. Thirdly, the interesting details about the impersonation that Erik (Hoaggie) is very popular in his home country from TV, where he plays the role of friendly characters. He was, however, determined to take on this role.
