Candyman Review
When I saw the trailer, I thought this was going to be a horror film in the 90s (that's what happened when filmmakers used the same theme in recent years. Peele (Exit). Basically, in Chicago, it's been 30 years since the Cabrini-Green housing project events. Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is an artist who recently moved into an apartment with his girlfriend, art gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris One night, Brianna's brother Troy (Misfits' Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) shares an urban legend with Helen Lyle, a graduate student who committed murder in the early 1990's. Residents were able to rescue the child before this Helen died in the fire. A heated meeting ensued. art analyst Fi nley Stephens (Rebecca Spence), Anthony yearns for a spark of creativity to transform his career. He becomes interested in this urban issue and goes to Cabrini-Green for inspiration. Examining the abandoned part of the project, he meets laundry owner William Burke (Colman Domingo), who informs him of Candyman's story. When Burke was young, he was shocked to meet Sherman Fields (Michael Hargrove), a man caught by a hook that police believe was the one who put a razor blade on a piece of candy that ended up in white hands. girl. Burke indirectly told police Sherman was hiding behind the walls of the tower building, and apartheid officials beat Sherman to death. As the children continued to find the candy with the razor inside, Sherman was removed from the case, and the legend says that if someone said "Candyman" in the mirror five times, Sherman's spirit would appear and kill the caller. Anthony is inspired by this story and develops the art show Say My Name, based on Candyman legend. It contains a bathroom mirror with a blood lair inside and showcases Brianna's art gallery. She is disappointed if she does not get the positive response of the audience. That night, one of Brianna's co-workers and his girlfriend was killed by Candyman after saying his name five times in front of Anthony's mirror show. The myth is spreading, and more and more people are being killed after repeating Candyman's name, which includes an art critic and a group of young girls at school. While exploring Cabrini-Green, Anthony was bitten by a bee on his right, growing into a large scab, and since then he has had physical changes that spread throughout his body. She goes to the hospital, where she learns that her mother lied about the birthplace, and when she talks to her mother, Anne-Marie (Vanessa Estelle Williams), she reveals beyond doubt that she was a baby Helen rescued from the fire the night she came out. he died. Daniel Robitaille (Tony Todd) was the first Candyman, Anne-Marie never told Anthony about these events because she wanted him to have a normal life. The public has vowed never to repeat this scandal later in the day, and they are worried about what will happen if someone breaks the agreement. Concerned about Anthony, Brianna goes to Cabrini-Green to find him and Burke, noticing that he first told her about Candyman. In the laundry, he is attacked and defeated by Burke, who takes him to an abandoned church where Anthony, his body continues to deteriorate, waiting. Anthony starts to get dark and tries to save Brianna as Burke reveals that he just didn't see Sherman's death, and he saw Sherman's ghost come back like Candyman and saw him kill his older sister and friend, who called him. Burke plans to have Anthony's police pistol on the floor to build a new story with Candyman as a tool for revenge rather than a symbol of pain and suffering for Blacks. To complete Anthony's conversion to Candyman, Burke removes his right hand and replaces it with a hook. Brianna managed to escape from the church and was chased to Cabrini-Green by Burke, who stabbed her to death. Anthony emerges and falls into his arms as police, called by Burke, appear and shoot Anthony dead. Brianna has been arrested and handcuffed, a police officer in a police car tries to interrogate him and agrees that Anthony provoked the police to shoot him. Brianna uses the rearview mirror of a police car to call Candyman. He turns out, now like Anthony, and kills the cops. As more police arrive at the scene, Anthony's body is full of bees, temporarily transforming it into a Burke, then taking Robitaille's appearance and ordering Brianna to "tell everyone". Starring Kyle Kaminsky playing the role of Grady Greenberg, Troy's boyfriend, Brian King as Clive Privler, and Virginia Madsen as the voice of Helen Lyle. Abdul-Mateen does amazing things as a passionate and equally talented artist fights for his art, the real story is cleverly compiled, and this sequence is politically charged. It has many clever features in the main story, from puppetry of a terrifying shadow in action to the origin of another Candyman (actually candy haha), is an amazing atmosphere, impressive at times, and honestly, I think is probably better than the original, amazing supernatural horror. Very good!
