 Chinese Doctors Review

The same director who gave us the excellent film The Captain (2019) is also directing the play, and some of those actors have also returned to work on the project. Since I had always liked Captain, I thought Chinese Doctors might be a great film and I was not disappointed!

This is an excellent medical drama of a real-time event that gives the audience a sense of the atmosphere in Wuhan during the first COVID-19 outbreak in China. It also outlines all the measures that can be taken to control the outbreak and the pressure that health workers face during such a disaster, not to mention the effects the outbreak has on ordinary people.

Looking at things literally is given first. Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital and the main character of the film, Zhang Dingyu, are real and, of course, Zhang Dingyu suffers from ALS in real life. I commend the authors of the text for their depth and exploration so that they can accurately reproduce the events that took place. For those with a certain knowledge of Chinese, there are also a few good details that doctors keep their regional names; for example, Dr. Tao Jun speaks Mandarin in Cantonese, because he is from Guangdong; I felt that these regional words (often excluded from Chinese movies) gave added authenticity to the suspension of this movie.

Basically, if you like real-life storytelling stories where professional staff have to work under great pressure to save the day (which I do), then this kind of film is really for you. Epidemics fans will also enjoy this movie, as it is based on real events that take place during the real epidemic. I read in one reviewer that the Soviets chose this type of film about "social interaction between people working in a particular industry or profession" a kind called 'Proizvodstvennaya'; although I’ve never heard of that genre before, I fully agree with the feeling that we need more of that kind of film, because I love this one!
