 Crime Story Review

Greetings again in the dark. Thanks to (or perhaps because of) Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Liam Neeson, it is not uncommon for us to have an action film of a top citizen. However, it is surprising to many of us to see Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss (BEAUTIFUL GIRL, 1977) load his gun and take to the streets in retaliation. Editor-in-chief Adam Lipsius received a double Oscar-winning coup by releasing Mira Sorvino (MIGHTY APHRODITE, 1995) as the daughter of investigator Dreyfuss.

"Based on real events", Mr. Lipsius books a film with elderly Ben Myers (Dreyfuss) riding in the back of a limousine. He can not unite, but in the open we can say, "When I wake up, I will choose something different." We then went back 12 hours to recreate what might have been Ben Myers' worst day. He was diagnosed with cancer, and although he was a former gangster, he claims to have "officially" gone 12 years ago, and runs a local bar with his loyal sidekick Tommy (Pruitt Taylor Vince always entertaining). Ben's estranged daughter (Sorvino) beats him with money claiming to belong to his daughter and grandchildren that Ben never agreed to. As far as we know, Ben's house was stripped of all his money (too much money) and dumped in the trash 3 men took advantage of Ben's beloved wife, Nan (Megan McFarland).

This initiates Ben's work of revenge. Gun by Glock, body by Devito. Her daughter is worried that she is doing this on her own, and there is another problem with her working for a politician Ben once helped her with what might have been a difficult job. In fact, there are a lot of sub-episodes, sub-episodes and characters that come in and go, so much of this is absurd. It works best when it is focused on an older (former) person trying to score, and it falters when it comes back to family things that are not working well. I believe there are five crying scenes, the most numerous of any movie not mentioned as SOPHIE'S CHOICE.

For those of us who remember Dreyfuss from his early TV days, briefly appearing in THE GRADUATE (1967), and true to AMERICAN GRAFFITI (1973) and JAWS (1975), there is the joy you can have in watching 'Mr. Holland 'takes a violent approach to revenge ... though not really John Aick's AARP rebirth. All in all, it is a normal take on anger, with bonus points in place in describing what it is like when a spouse's spouse succumbs to dementia.
