Malignant Review
The meaning of the word "evil" is: 1) which tends to cause intentional injury, suffering, or depression; feeling or expressing anger or hatred, 2) very harmful or harmful to the influence or effect); there is also a pathological explanation, which will be explained later. The trailer for this horror movie looked horrible, directed by James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, Aquaman) caught my attention, and the title sounded really bad. Basically, in 1993, Drs. Florence Weaver (Jacqueline McKenzie) and her colleague Dr. Victor Fields (Christian Clemenson) and Drs. John Gregory (Amir AboulEla) treats a psychiatrist named Gabriel at Simion Research Hospital. Gabriel has special powers, such as controlling the electricity and transmitting his thoughts through speakers. One night, Gabriel becomes violent and kills many employees at the facility. Twenty-seven years later, in Seattle, Madison Mitchell (Annabelle Wallis of Peaky Blinders) returned home after her pregnancy made her feel sick at work. She had an argument with her abusive husband Derek (Jake Abel), who smashed Madison's head against a wall, then locked herself in a room and slept. Madison later wakes up to find Derek's body after dreaming a man enters their house and kills him violently. The killer, still in the house, attacked Madison, and fainted. The next morning, Madison wakes up in the hospital and is told by her sister, Sydney Lake (Maddie Hasson), that her unborn baby did not survive the attack. Madison is interviewed by police detective Kekoa Shaw (George Young) and his partner Regina Moss (Michole Briana White) before returning home. There Madison revealed to Sydney that she had been found at the age of eight. Meanwhile, a woman (Jean Louisa Kelly) on a Seattle Underground trip was abducted by the killer and tied to the roof in an attic. Madison has another opinion, this time the killer killing Dr. Weaver. During their investigation, Shaw and Moss found a picture of Madison as a child in Weaver's home and learned that Weaver specializes in rehabilitating children. Madison tells her sister about another idea she had, this time the killer killing Dr. Fields, so they decided to go to the police. The killer contacted Madison and identified himself as Gabriel, Madison's childhood psychic friend. She and her sister visit their mother, Jeanne (Susanna Thompson), to learn more about her childhood, which includes looking at home photos of her birthday. Madison realizes that Gabriel was not just a selfish friend but a real person to whom he spoke in his childhood. Shaw finds a connection between the doctors and Madison, which leads him to Drs. Gregory, the next victim, was found dead. Investigators sought the help of a psychiatrist, hoping to unlock Madison's memories. Madison recalls that her real name was Emily May and that Gabriel wanted to kill her unborn sister. He approached to do but managed to control himself. Police arrested Madison when the abducted woman fell into a basement of her home, revealing that Gabriel was living in her house. The woman is Serena May, Madison's biological mother. Sydney visits Simion's abandoned hospital now looking for Emily's records. He discovers that Gabriel is Emily's twin who lives inside her body as an overgrown version of the "teratoma" (tumor), which shares the same brain and body as Emily. During Emily's childhood, Gabriel appeared as a half-child looking at Emily's back. Weaver operated on Emily to remove the tumor and then stitched Gabriel to his brain. He was not asleep during childhood but woke up when Derek hit his head on the wall. Gabriel's face now appears behind Madison's skull and directs his body back as he controls, describing the unnatural assassin's movements and fingerprints pointing down the crime scene. Madison is being held in custody along with other inmates, mostly women. In a fit of rage, Gabriel takes full control of Madison's body, kills all the prisoners and almost the entire facility with superhuman strength, and eventually escapes. Sydney and Shaw hold Gabriel at the hospital where Serena is recovering from her arrest. Shaw and Sydney were attacked by Gabriel. Sydney told Madison that Gabriel was the cause of her miscarriage many times in the past because she was dependent on her children. Angered by the revelation, Madison wakes up and takes control of her body. Madison is able to carry herself and Gabriel to the realm of the dark mind (the black abyss within her mind), and locks Gabriel in behind the bars, claiming that he is now in control and that Gabriel's power is still his. As Madison leaves Gabriel to rot in his mind, he insists he will be back one day. Madison says he'll be fine with her and leave the mood. Still in hospital and fully in control of her body, Madison lifts the hospital bed from Sydney with her newly acquired strength. The two hug as Madison reassures Sydney that although she is found, she will always be her sister. Serena watches happily as they hug, while the electric roar that accompanies Gabriel's attack sounds a little louder. Starring Marina Mazepa as Gabriel, Ray Chase as Gabriel's voice, Madison Wolfe as young Serena May, Ingrid Bisu as CST Winnie, Ruben Pla as Officer Rubin, Jon Lee Brody as Officer Lee, Patricia Velásquez as Nurse Velasquez, and Zoë Bell as Scorpion. Wallis is aptly cast as a crippled woman because of the horrible visions of people dying to see that it really happens, there is a horrible atmosphere throughout, the supernatural element is a little mixed up, but you certainly do not know where it is going, the bory killings and bonkers twist are amazing, all it's amazing enough. Worth to watch!
