 Escape from Mogadishu Review

Based on real events, the South Korean action-drama blockbuster Escape from Mogadishu is one of the biggest films of the year 2021 and aptly represents the country with a contemporary movie industry at the upcoming Academy Awards. The story is about the beginning of the ongoing civil war in Somalia, as it sees the ambassadors of North Korea and South Korea. Both agents clash and try to bribe local government to gain international support and recognition. However, as the rebels begin their merciless revolt and threaten foreign power, the two ambassadors must cooperate with the Italian ambassador to find a way out of the country.

This amazing battle of survival ensures on many levels. First of all, the places are absolutely amazing. As it is still possible to shoot a movie in Somalia today, South Korean filmmakers have chosen to re-create Mogadishu in Morocco and the end result looks very realistic. The designers of the set interviewed many politicians who had worked in several African countries in the early nineties to find reliable sets. Green hotels meet modest ambassadors and impoverished places as the film heals a country few people have ever been to.

Next, the players are absolutely amazing. From corrupt politicians to aggressive police officers to suspicious advisers and agents, this movie has a high number of amazing actors. The best actors from South Korea and abroad make these characters live with strong body language and strong dialogue.

The sequence of action in this film is also amazing. The war scenes on the streets of Somalia are as disturbing and practical as they can cause even the strongest spectators to tremble and cry. The attack on the North Korean ambassador is also a memorable incident as the fears of innocent victims are well expressed. Outstanding is the succession of cars chasing third place as North and South Korean convoys try to pass through the city to reach the Italian embassies. This survival battle includes dangerous collisions, fiery explosions and endless gunfire. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat in this impressive third episode.

However, the film conveys the message of unity, solidarity, and cooperation. North and South Korean diplomats can only survive if they trust each other and set their political goals aside. The film proves that the two countries must remain united and have a bright future together, as it was in East and West Germany in the early nineties.

At the end of the day, Escape from Mogadishu confirms a movie of intense action, heartfelt drama and intense joy. Simulation concerts, action sequences and settings are absolutely stunning. The plot is simple but impressive and realistic as it is based on real events. Those who say that the film may have been racist because of the lack of Somali actors and the negative portrayal of the civil war are totally wrong because the film portrays the events in the way that innocent people watched in the early nineties. South Korean cinema is known for its strong portrayal of reality instead of politically correcting things as many Hollywood movies are trying to do these days. If you are looking for a real cinema that stimulates your brain, heart and soul, you should definitely hear this cinematic highlight of the year.
