Earlier this year, there was another film with a similar title, "The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity," directed by Guo Jingming. This was based on Baku Yumemakura's 1986 novels' novel "Onmyoji". This new directing by Li Weiran, titled "The YinYang Master" is simply a completely different film, and was based on a 3D RPG strategy game also called "Onmyoji" by NetEase Games. They both had characters named Qingming and Boya, but that was just what they had in common.
There were the main characters in the play. Considered the same level of outstanding acting as Zhang Ziyi who lived in his time, Zhou Xun won the rare award as Best Actress for her role in "The Equation of Love and Death" (2008). Chen Kun also had a well-known film career behind him, with films such as "The Knot" (2004). Among the young actors, the most famous is the beautiful and loving Shen Yue, who played Dong Sanchai in the re-launch of the 2018 "Meteor Garden".
Like the previous Yin Yang Master film, the film was also a rich exhibition of the continuous state of special effects seen in China. The main areas, namely the Yin Yang Bureau, the Red Tower and the Qingming garden, were all well-designed and executed. Most notable here are three-dimensional computer-based Disney characters that were in the scenes interacting with human characters, especially the naughty ferret and the delightful Red Ghost.
The climax of the bridge over what looked like Zhangjiajie's natural stone pillars was also a spectacular sight, even though the designs of the fearsome beast with many tentacles and the strange design of Cimu (William Chan) were not. well done. It was just a disappointment to me that the special effects of Qingming's encounter with the main demon Xiangliu felt fast and he was not like the rest of the film. All in all, though, it was the colorful, captivating entertainment of the ages.
