The Water Man Movie Review
Gunner Boone is a boy living in the Pacific North West; her mother has leukemia and can do anything to save her. His family is new to the city and he is about to hear the legend of the 'Water Man'; an old miner who found immortality after finding a strange stone just before the flood swept through the city ... now he has rumors that he is wasting his time looking for his lost wife in the woods. Gunner overhears a girl named Jo tell a story about how she got into a fight with a Water Man and has a scar to prove it. He promises to take Gunner to him, for a price. They go into the woods together and soon Gunner's father realizes he is missing; a sense of urgency increases when a forest fire is reported.
I thought this film was a real pleasure. The boy's total hope of helping his mother and his father's search touches the heart without hearing the mawkish. The story goes at a good pace; originally introduced by Gunner and his family, the legendary The Water Man and Jo; this sets the stage for adventure when Gunner and Jo enter the Forest; here they face dangers that can put the viewer slightly on the edge even though we know that bad things are less likely to happen. Without going into the spoilers I know some viewers might be disappointed with how the story ends; I really liked it. The actors do an excellent job; especially Lonnie Chavis and Amiah Miller as Gunner and Jo and Rosario Dawson and David Oyelowo as mother and father. Some reviewers have commented on the beauty of having a family lead film with black lead; Certainly I do not object but I think it is probably very important that racism never becomes a problem in the film. It is important that some films address the issue of racism but it is important that there are films where the actor race does not care about the subject. The film setting is amazing because of the forest and the scenery. As well as doing a good job of imitating David Oyelo the impressive start of his directing. All in all I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good family film with a specific trip.
