Wolf Warrior 2 Movie Review

I was not impressed with the first entry of the Wolf Warrior Franchise which was released two years earlier. The first film was riddled with exaggerated, boring scenes and cheap special effects. That’s why it took me almost a year to convince myself to watch this song in a row. I'm glad I finally gave it a chance. This movie is one of the few situations where the sequel is much better than the original film.

The story is about a special army officer Leng Feng who spent some time in prison after attacking a brutal housing company boss. During his imprisonment, his relationship with his fiancée has changed and he has gone to Africa. However, he has also been abducted and is the only clue to anyone who could be responsible for the mysterious bullet Leng Feng sitting in a chain around his neck. As soon as he is released from prison, he moves to an unnamed African country where he works as a port merchant and sometimes protects workers from robbers. Yet he has not forgotten his bride and keeps seeking to find her. A civil war is raging in the country with Leng Feng volunteers to save Chinese nationals from hospital and industry. He meets a strong female doctor and a young local woman who has developed an immune system that fights a deadly disease. Leng Feng decides to protect the youth and the Chinese people and soon faces a large group of soldiers led by a vicious boss named Big Daddy. Things get personalized when Leng Feng realizes that Big Daddy is using the same type of bullet that was used to kidnap his fiancée.

The film guarantees at many levels. Simulation games have become fun, natural and flexible. In particular the lead actor Wu Jing has made tremendous progress in the two years between the two films. The places are particularly impressive here and show poor villages, isolated plants and modest hospitals. Special effects look very realistic now because of the open budget. Battlefields are powerful and have tanks, rocket launchers, machine guns, knives and martial arts. The body mass index is very high and this may be the worst film ever made in China. The film has a good pace from start to finish without a break. Even though the movie is more than two hours long, watching it seems to surpass the heartbeat.

A few minor errors remain. Although the main character faces hundreds of opponents, he does not seem to be sweating and surviving even the most extreme situations as a powerful hero who is sometimes overly exaggerated and easily predicted. The film apparently has a very strong propaganda message as well. In this case, the film tries to teach its viewers that the Chinese government will protect its citizens worldwide no matter what happens. In my opinion entertainment and politics should not be mixed in any way.

Still, Wolf Warrior II is an excellent action film with outstanding combat scenes, beautiful scenery and impressive special effects. It is one of the best movies of the decade. This movie has been fairly successful in China and deserves much attention abroad. Ignore the weak predecessor and instead watch this excellent sequence. On the closing side, mid-credit scenes point to the third film yet to come but after this excellent second episode, fans of action movies around the world are patiently waiting for the franchise to continue.
