False Positive Review
JIM'S REVIEW: (NOT RECOMMENDED) False Positive is an unsavory and unpredictable film about infertility and "mother brain", a statement I have never heard, but everyone in this movie has made it, as they often say throughout the movie. The film is a remake of the worst Rosemary’s Baby re-enactment without the supernatural or class bonds.
Lucy and Adrian Martin (Ilana Glaser and Justin Theroux) have been trying hard to have a baby but to no avail. After Adrian urged his wife to seek the help of her counselor and the renowned obstetrician, Dr. John Hindle (Pierce Brosnan), scored three points while playing bat. But as Lucy faces the challenges of her pregnancy, be they real or imagined, strange events are always happening, not one of them is fully explained. Are things created in his "mother's mind", or do others conspire against him? You will get it in nine months. As for movie travelers, you never do with this muddy screen game.
There is no logic or skepticism in this predictable story, just a dopey nightmarish sequence, a silly CGI cheese, and the bloody Grand Guignol climax that puts all the scenes in front of it. The direction of Mr. Lee is always thin and has failed to rely on visual exaggeration and the deadly effects of blood to create tension. (The filmmaker Pawel Pogorzelski should have taken Mr. Lee's conversations with him about making a fun black word literally, as many horrible "space" scenes are blurred that obscure any possible action.)
Screenwriter for director / writer John Lee and his leading girlfriend, Ms. Glaser, they say their film is mentally disturbing, but everyone is doing the wrong or the right thing in such a strange way that nothing makes sense. A little scary, a lot of unintentional laughter.
The players (and the audience) deserve the best, though Mr. Brosnan comes out unscathed as a good doctor, with Gretchen Mol as her faithful Stepford nurse providing risk-free play. As new parents, Mr. Theroux does not have a real character to play with and does not, and about Ms. Glaser, let's just say she's not Mia. Sadly, she is still Mamma Mia in her strong acting decisions.
No, there is nothing really good I can say about the disappointing and irrational False Positive. Without adding: Negative prognosis ... mom's mind and everything!
