Fisherman’s Friends Review
My Review Fisherman Friends I Rate 7/10
This movie really surprised me after a horrible swimming game with Men last year which also featured Daniel Mays I was a little hesitant to say the least. If you enjoyed a television series like Doc Martin and Ballykissangel or some good British honest films like Pride or Brassed Off I think you will love Fisherman's Friends.
This movie is heartbreaking and warm to the old seals and residents of Port Isaac Cornwall, which is a beautiful scenery. I had no idea the background story about this at the top of the famous Sea Shanty Group and liked my interest in the history of music.
A very modest but well-designed film with attractive characters. I fell in love with James Purefoy as Jim was a strong but passionate Party leader who was very suspicious of the London yuppies arriving in Port Isaac without informing the local culture or tradition.
Daniel Mays who excelled at this as Danny of the London Record Scout also secured a bachelor who as well as attempted to sign the team up to a recording contract and formed an attachment to Tuppence Middleton as Jim’s beloved beloved Alwyn and eventually melted away. and created a love angle in the movie.
I like Tuppence Middleton so much that he is new and natural I was amazed that he made so many well-known films like The Imitation Game and Downton Abbey I have to see him in some of them as well.
Indigenous songs and music of any race should be preserved as it reflects the joys of the misery of rural or country life. Especially after centuries of being sung by the Fisherman and sailors who did not know or would return to the sea to write to the widows and children left behind.
The film shows that there is a huge market that is often missed by the major recording companies and if the songs are honest and authentic and marketed in a way it will succeed.
The real band The Fisherman's Friends still sing regularly in Port Isaac and record regularly and their musical motto which is the most important part of their success is evident in the film.
The film is directed at Fisherman's Friends Trevor Grills and tour manager Paul McMullen who both died after being hit by a heavy door in February 2013 while preparing for a concert at the G Live music venue in Guildford, Surrey. The message before the end of the credit was 'For our friends Trevor and Paul'.
