The Power of the Dog Review
The Power of the Dog is Jane Campion's first film from Bright Star in 2009. Since then Campion has focused on television with satisfactory results.
Adapted from a novel by Thomas Savage published in 1967. Several attempts have been made to record it in the past. This included Paul Newman. I think it may be difficult to adapt.
Placed in Montana in 1925. Benedict Cumberbatch plays male alpha rancher Phil Burbank. He is an educated man who likes to get his hands dirty and be with other cattle. He has a sharp tongue and can be just as cruel.
Phil also pushes his brother George (Jesse Plemons) into calling him Fatso. They both run a farm and George and I do a lot of business. It is noteworthy that despite the names, the two brothers are very close. They even sleep in the same bed. Phil likes to talk about Bronco Henry. A man who taught them both to be farmers, to live wildlife in the west and an old man who was a great mentor to Phil.
Phil's cruelty shines through when Phil and his cow's hands go to a restaurant run by the widow Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst.) Phil's anger is aroused by his emaciated daughter Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who makes paper flowers. Phil enjoys laughing at both of them.
Her outrage escalates when her brother George marries Rose. He really hit the horse. He and Peter came to live on the farm but Phil refused both. Phil enjoys his brutality, playing mind games that drive Rose to alcohol.
Peter, the late father of an alcoholic, committed suicide. Peter realizes that his mother's life is going down to a living hell.
Dog Power has a slow opening of the new. It takes a while to get going. It is clear that Campion has changed the screen game and directed in a more economically subtle way.
You should focus on the visuals and the hidden information provided. There are trails thrown here and there. There is a scene where Phil asks Peter to look at the mountains and say what he really sees. The answer surprises Phil.
The second part when you look back is actually a game of revenge. The victims saw Peter and Rose. It's Phil himself.
Peter discovers that Phil is a homosexual. He plays that to get closer to the successful Phil. Phil becomes his true friend, teaching Peter to ride a horse, to become a farmer.
As they speak Peter points out that his father always told him to be kind. There is something Phil believes. When they both caught the injured rabbit. Phil tells Peter to kill him, it seems Peter will not be able to do it as he just strokes it but immediately cuts off his neck.
It all points out that Peter, who is studying medicine, plans to make Phil the next person to kill him to save his mother.
Eventually I was really caught up in the film. The more I thought about it, the more I liked it. In fact, after a few days, I wanted to see it again. Something I rarely do these days as I find many movies discarded.
The best games are from Cumberbatch, Dunst and Smit-McPhee. The biggest surprise is Cumberbatch.
Of all the amazing heroes, he would not be my first Phil decision. I see Robert Downey jr, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans and Mark Ruffalo playing him.
Cumberbatch makes for unusual and unusual types. Here you are really like a cow and you must have spent many hours in the gym.
