Snake Eyes Review
Did I ever tell you how much I love GI Joe?
If you do not know, the answer is probably yes. In addition to the entire room of our home dedicated to movies, there is a complete room for my collection. Did you know they made an airline company bigger than your coffee table? I agree. It's in my house.
When I first fell in love with my wife, the entire upper part of my house was dedicated to this toyline. And not just the number here or there. I am one of those crazy people formed by the army, who, if you do not know, are happy that you are a normal person and not dedicated to buying and decorating hundreds of the same army figures and building great collections. Well, to be fair, Peter Cushing also did this, so I cling to the knowledge that at least one respected person was playing with toys, but I doubt that Peter Wilton Cushing, OBE once had a woman say to him, "Why do you have thirty in the same tank? *"
I tell you all this so I can tell you that there is no way I can have a goal for this movie.
Snake Eyes have the same problem as comic books that they had before the Marvel Cinematic Universe did an amazingly simple thing: they just followed the source. Indeed, the problem is that there are all kinds of source material. G. A. Joe has a lot of comic books, play lines and cartoons, but perhaps the best version of the Marvel Comics story that came out written by Larry Hama when Snake Eyes was a central actor **.
Snake Eyes looks at that source information, especially the story of the two swordsmen who went through it - actually, very close to Enter the Ninja - and says, "Well, we can do some of that. But what if, and you go with us on this , was there a meteorite that people could use as a laser? "
The problem is that there is an audience that knows GI Joe in crazy cartoon stories ***, an adult audience that only loves jokes and toys, and then there is the audience you want: the ticket buying community, them. that actually makes the film a success.
Look - if you plan to watch this movie and you do not want its dumb environment to be ruined - get out now.
I'll get to it. I hope so.
Snake Eyes is not a soldier in this movie. I understand that the Vietnam War was decades ago and the story needs to be revisited. I am also not disappointed that Snake Eyes is now Asian-American and is played by Henry Golding, who is a high-profile actor and all out to make the body needed for this movie. And I get it - the idea that Snake Eyes lost his father and put him on the path of revenge is also not a bad idea. There are tons of movies based on the same idea and they work.
In fact, most movies work right up to the middle of the film, only for a moment to get the sense of it (and it gets worse from there).
A Yakuza boss named Kenta (Takehiro Hira) finds Snake Eyes fighting in the MMA underground - how that brings him closer to the man who killed his father is a debate - and hired him to shoot guns in the fish. One day, Kenta asks Snake Eyes to shoot the traitor - it ends up being Tommy AKA Storm Shadow and Kenta's cousin who still doesn't know him - but our hero ends up saving the man's life. But to recap why he did not know his cousin it turned out that all of this is a ploy and the Snake Eyes are a really bad person, sent to the Arishkage Dojo, a ninja family that has protected Japan for centuries.
Trust me - apart from Akiko (Haruka Abe) most Arishkage are geniuses who allow a stranger to come in and show them all their secrets.
Which brings one of my biggest problems before we move on. There are moments of beautiful drama in this movie, such as when Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow cut their hands and become blood relatives. We know this has to happen, but we have never been given a surprising reason why they should be so close when everything is based on a series of lies, which makes Snake Eyes look like a deceptive player instead of the hero we should follow. . And don't give me an excuse for a redemption trip - this is the first time I've met a hero, I think, and I want to love it.
The film can't decide if we should know the source, because if we do, we won't like much of this. And if we do not do that, we will not understand the wonderful reasons why so many things are happening ****.
A bizarre incident that caused Storm Shadow to turn his back on his family - jokes - was when Zartan sneaked into their dojo and used technology to kill Hard Master (he intended to kill Snake Eyes on Commander Cobra, as the Snake Eyes' family and brother of the evil leader were in danger of a car that destroyed the lives of both of them). This makes it look like Storm Shadow killed his uncle out of jealousy, so the ninja team disbands and the Snake Eyes are on their way to America. The two are destined to fight again and become brothers again after all the complexities of the future have not been resolved.
Compare that to the Snake Eyes hired by Yakuza and Cobra - a pair of shoes between Baroness (Úrsula Corberó) who appears to be fighting (and the band, strangely) representing Joe Scarlett (Samara Weaving, who is supposed to lead in movies like Ready or Not again not a second banana) - Stealing Ariskage power source, which leads to Storm Shadow using says McGuffin and he was kicked out of his ninja family while Snake Eyes apologized and everyone said, "Well, you burned all our foundation again many of our people were killed, but at least he said he was sorry "while Storm Shadow came out understandably.
But back to the point that ruined me for this.
Snake Eyes must pass three tests. The first is a good lesson of indifference, as he must take a vessel from Hard Master without losing his vessel. Second it looks like Luke is straight in the cave Empire Strikes Back moment. And finally, he has to go down into the pit and be judged, as the third case kills most of the people involved.
Because - seriously, this is a spoiler - deep in that cave there are dozens of sacred ants that can smell if a person is pure in heart to become ninja, they kill machines when you come to think. thus, reminding me of how Wanted went from command to supervillains in a comedy to all the holy assassins who listened to the woven cloth that told them who they should kill for the benefit of mankind from the confusing evil of the film.
When I saw the big snake start to judge the hero of the film, I just sat in the air, staring and saying, "Well, I'm out."
If I don't say anything good, there is an influential neon-lit Oldboy battle at the same time. Scarlett's costume looks very similar to the new Classified figure. And it is still exciting to see the Cobra sign on the big screen. Yet many wars become very dark,
