The Card Counter Review
William Tshela (Oscar Isaac) learned to count cards while spending 10 years in prison for torturing prisoners in Iraq. As a free man, he grinds daily life playing casino blackjack. He’s trying to win decently so he stays under the radar. La Linda (Tiffany Haddish) tries to persuade him to play poker for her. Contacted by Cirk (Tye Sheridan) seeking revenge on John Gordo (Willem Dafoe), an independent contractor who led the advanced investigation.
Playing blackjack does not make the best poker players. He was supposed to be a professional poker player while playing in prison. That would be a very direct connection. I really like this movie. I especially love the characters especially the Oscar Isaac style. I like unusual touches like wrapping furniture. I love the theme of trial, justice, and compensation. There’s a lot to like in all of these episodes but overall, the movie has no momentum. Stability is not in playing poker. I find the connection to finding lies in both poker and investigation. The fact is that the non-gambler has a hand. All the poles are in Gordo. The film skipped Cirk and Gordo. Tell Gordo it happens off-screen. All thickness is removed from those scenes. Somehow, I appreciate what Paul Schrader was trying to do by making those scenes look good but he was still keeping the scenes in the Iraqi prison. It is not the same as avoiding an issue. Thus, the pressure is captured on the ground. This movie goes this dangerous way but it does it without looking at the edge.
