The Bike Thief Movie Review

If there was a need for positive evidence that English public dramas were inspired by Italian neorealism, provided by 'The Bike Thief', made in 2020, the director's first film by Matt Chambers. The title is a direct and common reference to Vittorio De Sica's 1948 film, 'Ladri di biciclette'. His film is a tribute to the transformation of the old Italian neorealism film, but not the pastiche. The script, also written by Matt Chambers, also uses some of the key ideas, situations and action lines in Sica's film, transforming the action into that part of London at that time that most Englishmen and tourists ignore - the world of immigrants trying to find their place. and they have built up a reputation for being a world that gives them very little in the way of material and moral support. A film made in a simple and honest way, with its cinematic and acting qualities that can make it attractive to film lovers who love human and social dramas.

Viewers do not know the name of the main hero. In fact, he spends most of his film with his face covered by a motorcycle helmet. She is a Romanian immigrant and works nights delivering pizza to customers at a restaurant run by Yusuf. Work is limited to legalization, moped used for deliveries is not guaranteed. The supervisor also rents a place for him and his wife - a housekeeper - and his two children, a schoolgirl and a few-month-old boy. His social cohesion is weak. He speaks only English at a basic level and does not speak much to his colleagues, immigrants from other continents. The family works hard and lives on the edge. When the moped was handed over to the manager it was stolen - perhaps bad luck, perhaps revenge from colleagues - for the rest of his life. She is in danger of losing everything - her job, her place of residence, how to support her family. The police did not help him because the moped was not insured and they seemed interested in finding out if he was an illegal immigrant. We do not know much about this man, but he seems to be a very respectful and honest man. However, the situation he found himself in could not be resolved by honesty. As in the films De Sica and other Italian kings, the actor is encouraged by the contemplation of good morals, first of all by dedicating himself to his family, but the health and social conditions surrounding him put him in a very bad situation.

The lead role is well played by Alec Secareanu. We can suspect that his lack of communication is not the character of the character, and after his silence seems to have an unexplained life story. Anamaria Marinca is Elena, his wife, and I would like her role to be consistent. Alexia Maria Proca begins prominently in the role of a teenage daughter. Family scenes are interpreted wisely and empathetically. From a Romanian perspective, the film says something about the confrontation between many immigrants and Westerners who are far from welcoming them, and the moral conflict between home education and the realities of society. However, director and screenwriter Matt Chambers did not stress these issues, and from the point of view of the 'neutral' viewer, the film could be made by foreigners from any part of the world. The photo signed by Nanu Segal adds quality to the film, bringing to the screen London night, cold and dark, hiding its violence and conflict. The conflict seems to be slowly escalating, but it is a slippery slope in the dark. Matt Chambers wrote and made an intelligent film, but conveyed an important message and had a profound emotional impact. Compared to the brilliant original that inspired him, the 'Bicycle Thief' is not always less fortunate.
