Potter’s Ground Movie Review

"Potter's Ground" is a strange animal: part of the West, part of the Thriller, part of the Supernatural Adventure, this kind of film can only be indie, because no large studio will be able to market the worst thing.

However, this frankensteining variety is what makes it interesting. In less skilled hands, this kind of switch can be challenging. But because of the strong pace and broken conversation courtesy of director Michael Butts, Editor Josh Shreve, and writer (and star) Scott Crain, you, and the gang that you follow throughout the film, just admit that strange things happen in the Wild West.

In this way, "Potter's Ground" slightly reminds me of the departure of John Carpenter or Sam Raimi. Aside from the cost of expensive set pieces (although the set pieces here are really good, especially considering the budget), there is a lot of focus on characters and dialogue.

The movie rarely stumbles (it has a negative effect sometimes, but it’s not worse than some of the things I’ve seen $ 500,000,000 movies trying to escape), and they never fall apart. It is also refreshing to see well-dressed “wealthy criminals” slowly turning around and gaining new life.

Most of the actors and staff are brand new to film, or they have very few credits in their names. This is very surprising considering how strong this movie is.

Is this movie for everyone? No. The multi-faceted approach can be worse if you want a more straightforward West, and dialogue is more designed to cool off with the result than to be real. At the same time, this is a film about Aztec gold and ancient curses, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't watch it in the first place if you wanted something near the "Deadwood" lines.

In short, I believe this film is the beginning of the work of its actors and its crew. Only time will tell, but if they can do what they did with the shockingly low budget for this film, they will be out of the park with something much bigger.
